‘Trump doesn’t understand far right threat’
DONALD Trump ‘does not understand’ nationalism, council leader Ian Ward has claimed.
Cllr Ian Ward criticised the US president following the terror attack on a synagogue in Pittsburgh where a gunman killed 11 people.
He warned the threat of right wing groups cannot be underestimated.
Cllr Ward spoke during the anti-terror conference in Birmingham. The forum comes five years after Ukrainian student Pavlo Lapshyn stabbed to death 82-yearold grandfather Mohammed Saleem on the way home from his local mosque in Small Heath.
Cllr Ward said: “They (far-right groups) should not be underestimated at all. We are aware of far right groups in this country who the security services and police are very, very concerned about.
“We’ve had the murder here of Mohammed Saleem as a result of right wing extremism and you can see across Europe the growth of nationalist political parties, having learnt nothing it would appear from Europe’s history of the 1930s.
“It doesn’t help there has been a right wing terrorist attack in Pittsburgh in recent days, it just doesn’t help that we seem to have a president of the United States who does not understand what nationalism is all about.”
