Halford not for us, says boss Moore

-

WEST Brom will not offer a deal to free agent Greg Halford, manager Darren Moore has revealed.

Versatile Halford has been training with the Baggies and played for the Under-23s in their Premier League 2 defeat of Reading last weekend.

Moore has already signed free agents Tyrone Mears, Wes Hoolahan and Bakary Sako on short-term deals, but will not be handing a contract to Halford.

“He lives local, he’s out of contract and he’s just asked us if he can come in and train,” said the head coach.

“I’ve been pleased to help him out in this situation, to help him train with the boys and get up to full speed. Nothing more, really. We’ve just provided him with an opportunity to come and train because he only lives three miles from the training ground.”

The 34-year-old defender has played for Wolves, Blues and Nottingham Forest, among other clubs.

Halford joined Cardiff City in January 2017 and made 33 appearances in all competitions before he was released at the end of his contract in the summer as the Bluebirds prepared for the Premier League.

Moore is yet to decide whether to offer contract extensions to Hoolahan and Mears, whose deals expire midway through January.

“We haven’t made a decision on any players,” he said. “Probably because of the turnaround of games, I’ve been focused on keeping the team efficient and moving forward. It’s something I’ll look at.

“We’ve got a full week to build up for the Rotherham game. Next week will present an ideal time to look at that before we get into Christmas.”
