Hundreds line road as brazen boy racers flout injunction

-

HUNDREDS of people lined a major route through east Birmingham to watch brazen boy racers flout a city-wide injunction prohibiting car cruising.

Crowds thumbed their nose at authorities on Sunday night as they gathered under a High Court injunction sign on the 40mph Heartlands Parkway, near Star City, as lethal racers sped by.

Video from the scene showed a Vauxhall Corsa racing at speed against a Mercedes and a Ford Focus RS weaving between a taxi as a BMW 3 Series and Volkswagen Golf cruised down the outside lane.

Towards the end of the clip, police are seen breaking up the event as one car is pulled over at the side of the road.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Police were called to the Marston Green and Nechells area to several reports of street racing and anti-social behaviour.

“Car cruising has been an issue across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands for a long time, with meet-ups sometimes attracting hundreds of cars and spectators.

“We are continuing to crackdown on this issue by using our drones to gather evidence.

“We are developing links with the insurance industry and will be informing companies if their drivers are caught flouting the High Court injunction that bans car cruising across Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country.

“This could result in their insurance policies being cancelled or voided.

“The dangerous driving and excessive noise from car cruising results in a number of calls to police and we are now developing a number of methods to help identify and prosecute offenders.

On Sunday, two men, aged 23, and 22, were arrested on suspicion of breaching a High Court injunction and all were due to appear at Birmingham County Court this week.
