Scooter rider killed in crash
AN uninsured driver gave police fake details after colliding with a motor scooter rider in Birmingham, a court heard.
Grandfather David Oram, 72, was flung from the machine and died several days later from his injuries.
Car phone company manager Christopher Beckford, 30, of Wanstead Grove, Kingstanding, admitted causing the death of David Oram by careless driving and having no insurance.
He was sentenced to an 18-month community order, banned from the roads for three years and ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work.
On September 19, 2017 Beckford had been driving a Seat Leon in the direction of Harborne Golf Club along Tennal Lane, Quinton.
He went to turn right into Welsh House Farm Road as Mr Oram was riding his three-wheel Piaggio scooter along Tennal Lane in the opposite direction.
“The force of the impact caused Mr Oram to be thrown from the scooter and the car to spin 120 degrees,” said Simon Phillips, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court.
He said the defendant began to walk away but then came back. When police arrived he initially gave them false details before admitting his true identity.
A police investigation officer concluded Beckford had cut a corner before driving into the scooter’s path and would have had a reasonable period of time to see it.
Mr Oram underwent an emergency operation but suffered severe bleeding and doctors were unable to save him.
Leanne Schrouder, defending Beckford, said: “There was no malice in his driving. It was simply a most tragic accident.”
