Hotel and apartments could be built on old industrial site
A NEW hotel and apartment complex reaching up to 26 storeys is planned for an industrial site near Birmingham city centre.
Plans were this week revealed to regenerate the four-acre plot at 193 Camp Hill, in Digbeth, currently occupied by Swiss coil manufacturer Sulzer.
The historic company announced in December that it was relocating its repair facilities to a new home on Birmingham Business Park near the NEC.
The project would see construction of seven new blocks, ranging from three to 26 storeys and containing 480 apartments and townhouses, a 167-bedroom hotel and commercial space.
The tallest element of the regeneration would contain apartments while the hotel would be eight-storeys. There would also be public space alongside an energy centre to provide combined heat and power to the development.
London-based developer Eutopia Land is behind the project which has been designed by Darling Associates Architects, also based in capital.
It is expected that 178 jobs will be created by the complex if approved by city planning chiefs. Sulzer has occupied the Camp Hill site for more than a century and revealed last year that it planned to relocate to its new home in a phased basis over two years, in order to minimise disruption to customers.
Newly submitted documents supporting the application said: “Camp Hill is a significant brownfield site and has the potential to mark and support the transformation and regeneration of the Digbeth Creative Quarter and this part of the city.
“The investment in the area and new community on the site, as well as the creation of jobs both during construction and on completion of the development, will further result in significant economic benefits serving to enhance the viability of Camp Hill and Digbeth.”
