Historic car dealership to become apartments

-

A HISTORIC Birmingham city centre building – which was one of the first car dealerships to be built in the country – is to be transformed into apartments

London Development Group has acquired the historic Borough Buildings, in John Bright Street, for an undisclosed sum to create a new residential complex.

It follows the firm’s first deal in the city last September when it bought a group of six buildings in Caroline Street, in the Jewellery Quarter, to create a complex of flats, offices and restaurants.

The Borough Buildings were one of the first purpose-built car dealerships in the country after which they took on a number of uses including being home to the Ikon Gallery and more recently offices.

London Development Group already has planning consent to turn the site into 31 new flats with construction due to start in the spring.

Chief executive Daniel Obertelli said: “This is our second acquisition in Birmingham in the last few months. We are making key acquisitions in the city which represents our confidence in Birmingham’s economy and potential for growth.

“We have substantial capital to deploy and are on target to deliver 1,000 residential apartments in the city. We are looking forward to working with the council, our neighbours and the local community to develop proposals which enrich the area.”
