Surgeon’s lucky escape from carjackers

-

A BIRMINGHAM surgeon screamed for help after carjackers stole her car and sped off – while her hand was trapped in the door.

The 41-year-old victim, a leading medic at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, feared for her life after being dragged along Holloway Head, nears the city centre.

The paediatric urologist, who asked to remain anonymous, was attacked on her way home last Wednesday.

“I was in my car and a woman drove straight in front of me and cut me up,” she said. “It happened on Holloway Head. I was just coming out of the city, and the woman bumped into my car and we both got out.

“I wanted to exchange details and, as I was taking photographs of the registration plate, the woman started to walk back to her car.

“I kept saying to her, ‘I need your name’ and that’s when, all of a sudden, two guys jumped into my car and shoved me out of the way.

“I tried desperately to hang on and they shut the door, completely crushing my hand and it was stuck.

“I didn’t know car doors could close while your hand is wedged in.

“I was dragged a few yards and scraped all my legs but I managed to open the car door and rip my hand free just in time.

“Honestly, I was so lucky. They had no intention of stopping, even with me stuck by the side of the door.

“It could have been so much worse.”

The crooks left the Harborne doctor in a heap in the middle of the road, with her tights ripped and hands bloodied, before making their getaway.

They stole her Vauxhall Corsa which contained her mobile phone, handbag, keys, bank cards, ID and an expensive iFax machine.

Thankfully, the surgeon did not suffer any broken bones in her hand and has returned to work to help youngsters at the hospital.

“I’m a paediatric urologist but I managed to get colleagues to cover for me,” she explained.

“My one hand was crushed but it’s only soft tissue damage. I visited a hand surgeon earlier.

“I’m still shaken up and it was frightening, but I’m back in work now. Nothing was going to stop me from going back.”

The carjacking took place at around 6.30pm on February 13.

The stretch of road is situated between Holloway Circus and Bath Row near the Peace Gardens in the city centre.

West Midlands Police confirmed the force is investigating the incident.

I was so lucky. They had no intention of stopping, even with me stuck by the door.
