Smith facing big decisions and overhaul

-

DEAN Smith faces a number of “tough decisions” this summer with another “overhaul” on the cards at Villa.

That’s the view of former Villa striker Tony Cascarino, who admitted there is “concern” at the club after a dreadful run of form.

Villa have won only twice in their last 14 matches in all competitions, slipping to nine points behind Bristol City in the final play-off spot he Championship.

A number of players are out of contract at the end of the season and Cascarino said: “I think there is a very real concern.

“There have been some issues that Dean Smith has spoken out about.

“I think it’s two wins in 14 games. A dreadful run. They have really looked like an average team. Villa fans are concerned.

“How many were there (against West Brom)? 39,000, something like that.

“Big crowds. So, they have the backing of the support.

“He (Smith) has to get to this summer. Some clubs need a big overhaul and Villa have got to make a lot of tough decisions this summer.”

Former Villa defender Stephen Warnock also delivered a damning verdict on Smith’s side.

“Villa are still in a position where they can make it (to the play-offs) but they need a lot of things to go their way,’’ he said.

“The biggest concern for me is that with open expansive football they are very similar to Chelsea as they can’t defend.

“There is never a game where they look comfortable. Their squad, realistically, should at least be in the play-offs.’’
