Means more cases, claims city doctor

The drugs have a little bit of an effect, not such a marked effect. Is it because we have got better learning about how to manage the condition in general? Yes, absolutely.

“The tabloid press love wonder magic bullets and drugs but we have just got better at decision making. We’ve learned better who needs ventilating at what time and when they need to be put prone and so forth.” Dr Daniels also sounded an optimistic note about schools returning next month.

The 49-year-old said: “There’s plenty of data from observational series from multiple countries around the world suggesting that, yes children can catch coronavirus, yes they can have symptoms of coronavirus, but it’s pretty rare.

“But it’s thought to be that children are actually around one tenth as likely to spread it to people as an adult does.

“Providing the public continues to behave sensibly, that we start to return to normal, start to enjoy ourselves, start to eat out to help out and so forth, but do so within the rules of social distancing, if there is a second wave in the winter, it is likely to be very significantly smaller than the first wave.”

Dr Daniels also suggested the rise in cases was not down to teens and young adults – but older adults were causing the rise in cases.

He said: “This is about personal choice. It’s about being sensible.

“And it’s about those teenagers – by and large the youth of today are incredibly socially responsible and I’ve got a 22-year-old and an 18-yearold and they’re being more sensible than a lot of older adults I know.

“I am not saying everyone has behaved, but certainly from my middle-class bubble in Knowle and middle-class bubble of Sutton Coldfield I have seen people behaving perfectly.”
