Villa’s £20m keeper is up for challenge

-

EMILIANO Martinez knew he needed a ‘‘new challenge’’ after helping Arsenal to glory over the summer and has revealed how Dean Smith convinced him to join Villa.

The Argentine goalkeeper became Villa’s third signing of the transfer window yesterday after completing a £20 million move, following on from deals for Matty Cash and Ollie Watkins.

He is expected to become the club’s number one stopper and is in line to make his debut in Monday’s Premier League opener against Sheffield United at Villa Park. Asked how the move unfolded, Martinez, who has agreed a four-year deal, said: “I’ve been at Arsenal 10, 11 years, fighting for my spot. When I won those two trophies, the FA Cup and the Community Shield, I spoke to my family and said it’s time to have a new challenge.

“Villa gave me the opportunity to fight for the spot and play loads of Premier League games. That’s why I decided to come here. I trust the process and the manager’s playing style. I truly believe we can have a good season at Villa.”

A delighted Smith added: “We are really pleased with the signing of our new goalkeeper. We know how highly Arsenal rated him and we watched his outstanding performances last season in a trophy-winning top side.

“We moved for Emi when we saw the opportunity, as it is rare to be able to buy a top-class goalkeeper who hasn’t yet reached their peak age and who can therefore be a key player for our club for the long term.”

Martinez’s arrival brings Villa’s numbers in the goalkeeper department up to five. Tom Heaton was first choice until he suffered a serious knee injury on New Year’s Day.
