Birmingham Post

Now leavers are voting with feet

-

DEAR Editor, In last week’s Birmingham Post, the automobile industry worried that thousands of jobs will be lost if a car battery ‘gigafactory‘ is not built.

I’ve got news for vehicle makers in the UK: Brexit is going to kick you while you are down. How many times were Brexiteers told that leaving would be especially bad for vehicle manufacturers and in particular for West Midlands manufacturers.

There was no need to leave the EU to sell around the world and our automotive sector was selling to over 150 countries at the time of the Referendum.

Why do you think Sir Jim Ratcliffe is going to build cars in France rather than south Wales? Why did JCB build a £50 million HQ in Germany in 2019 and why has it said it wants India to be its main manufacturing hub? Why doesn’t Dyson manufacture in the UK anymore?

Because they want to be in the heart of the world’s biggest markets. Jim Ratcliffe, Anthony Bamford, James Dyson all supported leaving, but they aren’t going that extra mile to support British manufacturing because it doesn’t make good business sense anymore.

Roger Watts, Walsall
