Drug driver jailed for killing cyclist aged 85

- Staff Reporter

A DRUG-fuelled driver has been jailed after he mowed down and killed an elderly cyclist in Walsall.

Brian Humphreys, aged 85, suffered a serious head injury after being knocked off his bike by a Mercedes van driven by Jamie Bridgwater.

Mr Humphreys was rushed to hospital following the crash in Temple Street, Willenhall, on June 15 last year.

He died 11 days later. Bridgwater, 33, of Lichfield Street, Stourport-on-Severn, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving while he was over the drug limit after he tested positive for cannabis and failed to stop or move over for the cyclist.

Bridgwater was jailed for 18 months at Wolverhampton Crown Court. He was also given a 33-month driving ban and will have to re-take his test at the end of his sentence.

In a touching tribute to Mr Humhreys, his family described him as “a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend to many”.

They said the 85-year-old was “loved by so many for his enthusiastic approach to life and age was always just a number”.

“Brian’s life was filled with good times surrounded by the people he loved most, exploring the world, laughing and dancing up until the day he was cruelly taken from us.”

His family added: “Our memories will be treasured, but a huge part of our lives will now be forever missing.”

Det Sgt Paul Hughes, from West Midlands Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Nothing can compensate for the loss of a loved one.

“However, I sincerely hope this admission of guilt and subsequent sentencing of Bridgwater will provide some comfort to Mr Humphreys’ family.

“This is a very sad case, one that highlights the tragic and serious consequences that careless and drug driving can have.”
