MP condemns soft sentences for killers given 3 and 4 years

Thugs attacked husband after launching racist rant at wife

TWO thugs who killed a husband as he tried to protect his wife have been jailed for a total of just seven years.

Selly Oak Labour MP Steve McCabe said he was “amazed at the leniency’’ of the sentences given to Jamie Taylor and Taylor Pountney.

Taylor and Pountney, who was just 17 at the time, had taken exception to Amaan Momand and his wife crossing the road in front of the car they were in.

Mr Momand, aged 23, was punched and kicked when an argument spiralled into violence near shops in Alcester Road South in Maypole on September 19, 2019.

Racial abuse was shouted at Mr Momand’s wife and, as the confrontation escalated, Pountney punched Mr Momand, knocking him backwards off the pavement.

As he stepped back up, Taylor launched a high kick, causing Mr Momand to fall against a nearby car.

Both blows struck Mr Momand on the head and neck, resulting in fatal injuries.

Passers-by tended to Mr Momand before paramedics arrived and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he died three days later. A post mortem examination showed he had died from a head injury.

Taylor and Pountney fled the scene, but CCTV of the attack proved vital as it helped police identify them and track down the red Peugeot they drove away in.

Taylor handed himself in to police on the evening of the attack and

officers traced Pountney to an address in Birmingham, where he was arrested on September 22.

Following a two-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court, Pountney, now 18, of Trittiford Road, Yardley, was found guilty of manslaughter.

Taylor, 23, of Tidworth Croft, Kings Heath, previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Taylor was jailed for four years and Pountney for three.

Det Insp Michelle Allen, from the Homicide Department, said: “Rather than drive away and carry on with their day, this pair chose to get out of

the car they were travelling in and confront Mr Momand and his wife just because they’d had to brake to allow the couple to cross a road.

“This is a senseless and tragic incident over a matter so trivial that descended into such significant violence that a man has lost his life. This could have been avoided if they had simply driven away.

“My sincere condolences remain with Mr Momand’s family who are still coming to terms with their loss.”

Now MP Mr McCabe has demanded Justice Secretary Robert Buckland look into the sentences.

Mr McCabe said: “Manslaughter may have been the correct charge given that technically they didn’t set out to kill Mr Momand, but this was a vicious, deliberate and premeditated attack which resulted in them killing this poor man.

“I’m amazed at the leniency of the sentences.

“Both the Prime Minister and the Justice Secretary have been talking a lot about tougher sentences recently, so I’ll be expecting them to agree to take another look at this.”
