Hotel and square plan for Paradise
£700m scheme unveiled for huge city centre redevelopment
TWO more buildings are set to be constructed at the £700 million Paradise project in Birmingham city centre as developers launch their latest public consultation.
The work will comprise office block Three Chamberlain Square and a 17-storey hotel on land next to the historic Town Hall along with new public space.
The proposed new hotel has been designed through a collaboration between ISA Architecture and Birmingham-based Glenn Howells Architects and will have 152 bedrooms, a ground-floor café or restaurant and sky bar.
The office block, which has been designed by Bath-based Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, will be ten storeys and contain 180,000 sq ft of space.
The planned new public realm includes Ratcliff Passage, between the Town Hall and Three Chamberlain Square, which will become the new home of the statues of James Watt and Joseph Priestley.
It will also have a new tree-lined route to the Town Hall tram stop.
Western Terrace will lead down to a refurbished walkway through to Arena Central and Broad Street, designed by landscape architect Grant Associates which worked on the first phase of Paradise.
Phase one of Paradise comprised office blocks One and Two Chamberlain Square alongside new road routes and public realm.
The first part of phase two is another office block, called One Centenary Way, which is currently under construction.
Among the plans for phase three is
Octagon, a 49-storey residential tower fronting onto Summer Row which received planning consent in April.
Rob Groves, regional development director with Paradise’s development manager MEPC, said: “Our plans for completing phase two will create jobs, opportunities and promote skills for the people of Birmingham as well as helping Paradise realise its potential as a game changer for the city.
“Our ambition has always been to create a truly mixed-use development and, in our proposals for completing
the second phase, we are bringing together plans for hotel and leisure use, exemplary commercial space and a large amount of new public spaces.
“Moving ahead with a number of new buildings right now is a massive vote of confidence in Birmingham and the regional economy’s recovery from the Covid pandemic.
“We have had an incredibly positive response to our first two buildings and the transformation of Chamberlain Square.
“We want to continue to build on this and give people who will live
and work at Paradise and visit the estate an even more enjoyable experience by opening up those connections across and through the city centre that we have always talked about in relation to the Paradise masterplan.”
The public consultation is now live and will run until July 30 ahead of a planning application being submitted to the city council.
