We’ve got to tidy up others’ mess - Bowyer

-

LEE Bowyer says City are paying for the over-spending and poor recruitment of previous years as the gulf between his team and league leaders Fulham was laid bare.

Blues were hammered 6-2, blown away by a three-goal blitz in eight first-half minutes which set Marco Silva’s men on their way to yet another handsome victory. While Fulham have scored 19 times in their last three games, Blues are struggling to regain the momentum of early season.

Bowyer made hopeful noises about the transfer window – but put that in the context of wasted investment in the not-too-distant past.

“Myself and Craig (Gardner, technical director) are constantly talking to people but it’s difficult,’’ said the head coach. “I have heard there is going to be some backing and money available so that’s a plus.

“I just wish that things didn’t happen the way they did in the past, I have said before, myself and Craig have got to tidy up somebody else’s mess.

“The board, I feel for them because they have given money to players and they have bought players over the last few years and now it’s affecting us because some of the contracts are not good.

“That’s punishing us now, and it’s going to punish us for a little while, it’s going to take time. You feel like your hands are tied a little bit but you just have to get on with it.

“Would I like two or three more? Of course, maybe Fulham might give us a couple if I ask nicely!”

Blues’ interest in one Fulham player – Alfie

Mawson – is well established, although Bowyer refused to elaborate on his interest in the 27-year-old.

“Alfie is a very good defender, he is a Fulham player – I am joking by the way – Mitrovic, it would be kind if we could borrow him, he’s a goal machine,’’ he said. “I can’t talk about other people’s players, it’s disrespectful.”
