Go-ahead for 17-storey Paradise hotel scheme
ANEW 17-storey hotel will be built as part of the new £700 million Paradise project in Birmingham after receiving the green light from city planners.
The hotel will front onto Paradise Street close to the Town Hall as part of phase two of the long-running regeneration project which also includes new office buildings One Centenary Way and Three Chamberlain Square.
It will have 152 bedrooms, ground floor restaurant and a roof-top sky bar and will sit among new walkways and public realm also being created as part of the phase two works as well as benefiting from the nearby Town Hall tram stop.
No occupier has yet been signed up to operate the hotel but a spokesman for Paradise said discussions with the market were ongoing.
Phase one of Paradise comprises offices buildings One and Two Chamberlain Square, redrawn road routes around the site and new public realm.
The future third phase will have more office buildings and the 49-storey apartment tower Octagon which already has consent in place.
Rob Groves, regional development director with Paradise’s development manager MEPC, said: “The planning permission for the hotel means we can now move forward towards completing this next phase of the development which is already impacting the legibility and connectivity of the city centre.
“With One Centenary Way, Octagon and further landmark buildings coming forward, we’re continuing to bring new cutting edge buildings to Birmingham, creating new jobs, skills and opportunities for the city and region.
“The plans to complete phase two will continue to develop and underline our overall approach.”
Edinburgh-based ISA Architecture designed the new hotel, with planning consultancy from Turley.
Dav Bansal, a partner at Birmingham-based Glenn Howells Architects which masterplanned the site, added: “In collaboration with ISA Architecture, we are delighted to reach this major milestone with planning approval for a new boutique hotel at Paradise.
“The hotel adds another dimension to this mixed-use destination and extends the civic quality that has already been delivered in phase one in and around Chamberlain Square. Forming the southern edge of the masterplan, this crafted corner piece will be crowned by a sky bar which will deliver panoramic views from the terrace and bring a fluted silhouette to the city’s skyline.”
