The battle for Erdington

With voting taking place in the Birmingham Erdington by-election today, both major parties are making their final appeal to voters. While 12 candidates are standing, recent election results suggest Erdington is likely to be a two-horse race between Labour,

BEHIND every success our region has had over the last few years, one thing is always present: a hardworking team of local MPs dedicated to making it happen.

From securing investment in housing to putting more police on our streets, local MPs are the key to any action on our shared priorities.

So the people we vote for have a huge impact. And that’s why this Thursday is such an important moment for Erdington residents. You’ll choose Erdington’s next MP.

This is a chance to pick someone who will champion residents, stand up for Erdington and get things done for the local community.

In my view, there’s only one person who fits the role: local champion Robert Alden.

After all, Robert has been getting things done in Erdington for over 16 years.

As an Erdington councillor, Robert worked with residents to save Short Heath playing fields when the council out them at risk of development.

Robert has worked with the local community to start planning the regeneration of Erdington town centre.

Robert is working to ensure new businesses take over GKN’s site when they sadly leave their Erdington factory.

Whether he’s supporting local residents or bringing in new businesses, Robert Alden is the definition of a local champion. And while other candidates might make big promises at this by-election, Robert has spent the last 16 years making big things

happen. That’s why I’m backing Robert Alden in the Erdington by-election. Without a shadow of a doubt, Robert would be a fantastic addition to our team of local MPs. I know from experience that if you want someone who’s going to fight tirelessly for residents, you want Robert Alden on your side.

But if you’re still unsure about who would make the best local champion for Erdington, you should take a look at Robert’s long-term plan. Because the truth is Robert has already started work on it.

For example, Robert and I are determined to tackle the rise in HMOs and exempt accommodation.

Too many vulnerable people are being placed in unsuitable accommodation, and this isn’t just bad for them: it’s hurting communities across North Birmingham.

That’s why we’re working towards a change in the law. And while Robert is making progress, we need your support to go further.

If Robert is lucky enough to be elected, he’ll be able to make the case for a change in law directly to ministers.

The same goes for so much of his long-term plan: Safer streets. More jobs. New investment. These are issues we can fight for together. But it really does come down to your vote on Thursday.

So remember that this by-election is different.

It isn’t a general election and it can’t change the government; but it can change whether we get things done for residents.

Your vote will have an enormous impact on Erdington – you will decide whether or not we can focus on our shared priorities.

That’s why Robert Alden has my full support. And if you’re looking for a local champion who will stand up for Erdington, focus on our shared priorities, and work with me to make things happen for the local community, then I encourage you to back Robert Alden too.
