Woman knifed partner in row over song lyrics

-

A WOMAN who stabbed her boyfriend with a kitchen knife in the stomach after a drunken row over song lyrics is beginning a 28-month jail sentence.

Maria Jones, 42, delayed calling paramedics to treat the victim, who ended up spending 20 weeks in hospital but survived the horror attack, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Jones, of Moat Road in

Oldbury, admitted unlawful wounding.

Recorder Nixon told her: “It is tragic to see someone like you standing before the court. This was a vicious, drunken attack with a large kitchen knife, provoked by nothing more than who knew the words to a song.

“The injury was severe. His intestines were protruding through the stab wound. You left him to suffer. He asked for help.

“When you phoned the ambulance, you didn’t want to help him at that time. It is clear you could have killed him with a large kitchen knife.”

Rachel Pennington, prosecuting, said the pair were separated but kept in contact with one another before the assault on February 6 last year. Her boyfriend travelled to Jones’ address that night, after finishing work for the week, with a view of staying for the night.

She said: “They spent the evening listening to music and talking. The victim noticed, shortly before 1am, that the atmosphere changed.”

“One of them went to buy alcohol before they continued listening to music. But there was then a “disagreement about who knew the words” to a song, said Ms Pennington.

Jones then went into the kitchen and took a knife from a drawer, which was witnessed by her partner, who shut the door. He then told Jones to ‘stop f ****** about,’ the court heard.

But then Jones came in and stabbed him in his stomach, said Ms Pennington. She then delayed in assisting her partner with medical assistance, before calling for an ambulance later that morning and he was taken to the

Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

Simon Burch, defending, said: “She has demonstrated real remorse and empathy for what happened.”
