Criticism over Victoria Square plaque riddled with errors

-

A NEW Commonwealth Games plaque in the city centre has been ridiculed over glaring spelling errors.

The Victoria Square plaque, commissioned by Commonwealth Walkway, was in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee and serves as an information board on landmarks and key sculptures such as Iron:Man, Queen Victoria and The River.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors will descend on the city for the Games and many will no doubt be scrutinising the board for tips.

Some of the eight blunders include Colmore Row misspelled as ‘Colomore’, sovereignty is written as ‘sovereignity’, ruling has become ‘rulling’ and we live in the ‘West Midland’ instead of West Midlands.

Sculptor William Bloye, who recast the Queen Victoria statue in bronze in 1951, has seen his surname changed to ‘Boyle’, initiative is misspelled as ‘initative’ and Platinum Jubilee is written as ‘Planinum Jubilee’.

Brummies have also been scratching their heads over the unusual phrasing of ‘the Birmingham’s Symphony Orchestra’.

Social media critics have been quick to leap upon the errors.

Debbie Jones said: “Making Birmingham look ridiculous, once again! As if Brummies weren’t ridiculed enough!”

Keira Harris added it makes “Brummies look dumb”, while Paul Assinder said the plaque in its current state is “unacceptable”.

Jade Larkin said: “We’re going to be laughed at whenever people visit our city.”

Thankfully, those hoping for a quick fix are in luck as it has been confirmed that the plaque will be ‘sorted’ over the next fortnight.

Commonwealth Walkway CEO, Jim Walker, took full responsibility for the mistakes. He told the Post: “I appreciate this (the concerns) and we will be sorting it out in the next couple of weeks.

“It’s my fault. Trying to do too much, too fast.”
