Police killer attacked Midland jail guard with bar

-

A POLICE killer has been found guilty of beating up a female prison officer at a Midlands maximum security jail.

David Bieber, 58, a former US Marine, was in Long Lartin for killing a police officer and trying to kill two others.

A jury at Worcester Crown Court found him guilty of wounding with intent and possessing a weapon inside jail.

After the verdicts, they were told of his brutal past and heard he was an extremely violent prisoner who was at high risk of attacking someone and of escaping from the Worcestershire prison.

The trial heard how Bieber repeatedly struck the prison officer, Alison Smith, with a metal bar with a sharp prong on the end. During the attack he shouted: “I’m going to f***ing kill you, bitch.”

His victim needed hospital treatment for her injuries but is now back at work.

Bieber had denied all the charges and told the court he had no intention of killing Ms Smith, but said “he could if he wanted to” because he was an “ex-US Marine who knew how to kill with his bare hands”.

Giving evidence from HMP Wakefield via video link, Bieber boasted: “I could have murdered her 10 times over that day because we were in the library together earlier with no other officers and I didn’t. I waited until we were in front of eight or 10 other officers.

“I’ve been professionally trained to kill, I’m an ex-Marine and know how to kill quickly and silently. I was shouting ‘I’m going to f***ing kill you’ as part of the big show I was putting on.

“If I’d wanted to I could have killed with my bare hands, I know how to snap someone’s neck. I just made a big incident to get moved to another prison.”

He said he was unhappy at Long Lartin as his doctor had reduced his morphine and anti-anxiety medication.

Bieber told the jury how he felt bad for attacking Ms Smith. “She seemed a sweet and nice woman and I feel like a horrible piece of s**t that I had to scare and harm her in the way that I did.”

After the verdicts, the judge said Bieber was a high-risk inmate who could only be moved around the prison accompanied by armed escorts as it is thought he would try to escape.

The judge said Bieber was in Long Lartin for shooting dead a police officer, PC Ian Broadhurst, during a routine traffic stop in Leeds in 2003. During the incident, he also shot two of PC Broadhurst’s colleagues, who survived.
