Swift: Jed deal a real statement of intent

- JOSEPH CHAPMAN Football Writer

JOHN Swift believes Albion have recruited one of the best players in the Championship after adding fellow new signing Jed Wallace to their squad.

Wallace, who left Millwall upon expiry of his contract, signed for West Brom last week and, by doing so, followed another free agent in Swift through the door.

It just so happens the pair are already familiar with one another, through their Portsmouth connection, which would have stood them in good stead when they reported for pre-season testing and training at Albion’s training ground last Thursday.

The arrival of Swift and Wallace has prompted excitement among the Baggies’ fanbase, who regularly displayed their discontent over the course of a dismal campaign last year.

Seeing the duo link up with the squad in Portugal has brought fresh optimism as manager Steve Bruce prepares for an attempt to return to the top flight.

Swift, who boasted excellent goal and assist numbers at Reading, believes Albion have acquired a player in Wallace whose talents rank him among the best in the division.

“Because my deal was so early, you’re looking at Twitter, looking to see who’s coming in, who’s leaving,” he said.

“It was good to see Jed come in, he’s a top-quality player and he always has been for Millwall in the Championship.

“He’s been prolific the last four or five seasons. It shows the intentions of the club. We want to be pushing right at the top. We need the good players and Jed is one of the best in the Championship.

“I’ve known him since we were younger because of our Pompey days, so it’s good to have him in and it’s good to be around all the other lads as well.”

Midfielder Swift, who reached double figures for both goals and assists

in a struggling Royals side last season, has been snapped up to deliver more creativity in the middle of the pitch.

He attended the club’s final-day win over relegated Barnsley as he mulled over his options, and opted for Albion after speaking with Bruce.

The 26-year-old was familiar with a couple of faces in the dressing room prior to signing for the club.

“I knew Alex Mowatt from our young England days, I know Callum Robinson,” he revealed.

“I’ve played against almost every player here, quite a few times.

“It’s good to be in, good to be around the lads and the staff. I’m just glad it’s here now.”

Bruce was delighted to get his top targets signed so early in the window.

“He (Swift) was at our game on the last day of the season,” he revealed.

“That’s how long ago we were planning. We identified those two, in particular, as arguably the stand-out free transfers in the division.

“We wanted to try and improve our creativity to score a goal, and also add a bit of pace – and both of them have that in abundance.

“Well done to my CEO Ron (Gourlay), who has worked tirelessly to get them. They were the two main targets and I am delighted.’’
