Another fine mess we’re in

-

THE sacking of Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng last Friday has badly politically wounded Liz Truss as both Prime Minister and Tory leader.

Tens of thousands of mortgage borrowers will hold her responsible for the expensive situation they are now facing.

It is bad news for the Tory Party with an election less than a 100 weeks away. Additionally, the appointment of Jeremy Hunt to succeed Kwarteng seems a little strange for he has no Government experience in any of the financial departments.

Rather like sending an electrician to do a plumber’s job.

It is being widely reported that ‘letters’ are being handed to the Chairman of the 1922 Committee, which could mean him having to act. I can understand this, for the Prime Minister was as guilty of messing up as her Chancellor.

Another election is surely not on the cards, so a ‘unity’ candidate would have to be found, somebody that all shades of Tory MPs opinion could support for, after all, Truss was not their choice in the first place.

Hunt has already indicated that taxes will rise and Government expenditure go down, the exact opposite of the gospel that the PM has been preaching, her position is surely untenable.

I imagine that she must give the matter some thought and act accordingly.

So, who can command the respect of all scheming wings of the Conservative Party in Parliament?

Not an easy choice, but for experience and wisdom, the name of Iain Duncan Smith springs to mind.

He is a former leader, has vast experience and a statesmanlike personality.

He might just be the one to knock heads together and at least give the Tories a slim glimmer of hope, although many MPs are doomed to have their Westminster careers terminated or interrupted.

What has occurred has been so unnecessary and would have been avoided if a little sense and reason could have been brought to bear amongst those who felt their career ambitions to be more important than the good of the country, who believed that by axing Boris, their future would be brighter.

2022 will not go down in Tory Party history as a shining example of how to govern.
