Netflix skewers the Royals... but Harry & Meghan show goes on

- Chris Bucktin

ALTHOUGH undeniably an extraordinary show with an outstanding cast and unparalleled production, a few series of The Crown was enough for me.

While a must-watch for millions, I found it all a little too cliched.

That does not mean to say, however, that I have not seen how the show has continued to court controversy as it exploits the royal family’s life and loves, tragedies and traumas for profit.

Only this week, the US makers Netflix sparked further backlash as it emerged the new series plans to recreate Princess Diana’s final tragic moments in Paris.

It comes as the show, starring Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, faces increasing anger over its plot lines, with claims of insensitivity so soon after the Queen’s death.

Bosses are also under fire over soon-to-be-aired scenes suggesting Prince Philip had an affair with a female friend.

Yet despite the portrayal of his own family, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle seem happy to support the makers by taking their millions for their own Netflix programme.

This week it was reported their controversial documentary has been delayed after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were said to have wanted to make edits following the Queen’s death.

“They’re rattled at Netflix, and they blinked first and decided to postpone the documentary,” a source is said to have told US website Deadline.

The docu-series did not have an official release date initially. Still, multiple sources said it was to drop before Christmas – about a month after the premiere of the fifth season of The Crown.

Over the weekend, it was also claimed there were issues with the programme after producers allegedly had concerns with comments Harry and Meghan made, which appeared to contradict

what he wrote in his upcoming memoir.

Ever since inking their multi-million dollar deal, people have been in disbelief over how the Queen’s grandson has taken money from Netflix that has been exploitative of his family for years.

But it seems such a move is in keeping with their playbook – using their royalty and connections to line their pockets so they can live the self-sufficient life they want.

All this while millions, particularly Americans, believe The Crown is more fact than fiction.

But that clearly does not worry Harry and Meghan.

As they continue to trade off their relationships with the royals, they appear content with their employers trashing – as they too have done – their relatives.

Harry has never made any secret of his contempt for people he feels tormented his mother to her death.

How sorry then that he should suddenly find himself on the payroll of those turning her suffering and the rest of his family into entertainment.

Their deal leaves you wondering how The Crown will tackle the story of the Duke and

Duchess’s departure from the UK.

Even more so, who would play former actress Meghan? Hmmm...

URIOUS House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told aides if Donald Trump made good on his promise to accompany the violent mob to the US Capitol, she would “punch him out”.

Speaking at a rally on January 6, 2021, the then-President urged his followers to protest the certification of the Electoral College votes confirming Joe Biden had won the 2020 election.

Trump assured the crowd he would join them as they marched to the US Capitol building.

Pelosi is captured on video looking out of the window as she takes refuge from the mob.

“If he comes, I’m going to punch him out,” she says.

“I’ve been waiting for this, for trespassing on Capitol grounds. I’m going to punch him out, and I’m going to go to jail, and I’m going to be happy.”

Listening to people’s reactions to the footage, she needs to join the queue.
