Crook went on rampage before 120mph police chase

-

A DRUG addict attacked a Birmingham pub landlord before trashing his pub and later reached speeds of up to 120mph as he “careered” through traffic during a police chase.

Jamie Barnes had previously been involved in another police pursuit when he drove at up to 100mph, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Barnes, 35, of Blossom Grove, Hodge Hill, admitted two charges of dangerous driving, burglary, driving while disqualified, inflicting grievous bodily harm and failing to provide a specimen.

He was jailed for two years and two months. He was also banned from the roads for three years and one month.

Danae Larham, prosecuting, said Barnes broke into the Trident pub in Timberley Lane, Shard End, in the early hours of August 24 this year after throwing a plant pot through a window. The landlord, who had been upstairs, was disturbed by the noise.

“He proceeded downstairs to investigate what was happening and came face to face with the defendant who immediately punched him directly in the face with such force that it knocked him to the floor.”

She said Barnes went behind the bar and started to take bottles of alcohol while the landlord managed to pick up a bottle and hit the defendant over the head in order to deter him.

She told the court: “The defendant pushed him back down on the floor and proceeded to repeatedly stamp on his face and kick him to his body.

“The defendant then walked around the pub causing significant damage. He smashed a TV, a jukebox, gambling machines, four stools and a door.”

Barnes drove off in a BMW and was spotted by police half-an-hour later when a chase began.

Officers were so concerned about his driving that they requested air support and Ms Larham said: “He was careering in and out of traffic at 120mph.”

He fled after the car crashed onto a verge. Later at the police station Barnes refused to cooperate when attempts were made to test him for drugs and alcohol and pretended to be asleep.

Joseph Keating, defending, said there had been a gap in his offending which had started again following the death of his maternal grandmother.
