Hudd ace Russell on shopping list for Baggies
WEST Bromwich Albion are reportedly eyeing another bargain transfer, with Huddersfield Town’s Jon Russell on a shortlist.
According to The Sun, West Brom want to make a move for the 22 year-old given he is out of contract in the summer. It is being reported that the player could be available for a knock-down fee in the winter window.
Albion dipped into the free agent market in the summer to land Jon Swift and Jed Wallace from Reading and Millwall, respectively. And with West Brom looking for more cut-price deals, a move for Russell, a former Chelsea academy player, could be in the offing.
A London native,
Russell joined Huddersfield in July 2021 on a two-year deal, initially linking up with Huddersfield’s B team. Terriers head of football operations Leigh Bromby said at the time: “He’s a very interesting player who offers different qualities to the squad.
“From speaking with Jon, it became really apparent just how much he wanted this opportunity; he has a huge desire to be here.”
A central midfielder by trade, Russell has made 30 appearances for Huddersfield and scored two goals.
With extensive experience of academy football with Chelsea, Russell appeared in UEFA Youth League matches and appeared in last season’s Championship play-off final against Nottingham Forest. This season, he has played seven times but has not been seen since a 3-1 defeat to Reading on October 1.
Russell was not involved at all for four matches but did make the bench for three games. However, he has not been in a matchday squad since November 2, when he appeared on the bench for a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland.
Russell’s Huddersfield are in grave danger of relegation, given they are bottom of the Championship table with only 19 points from 20 games. They are four from safety, with Albion on 23 points in 21st place.
