RAISE A GLASS

- WITH JANE CLARE

I journeyed through the snow-clad countryside of southern England last week on the Eurostar, confident that Christmas is really here.

It wasn’t just the snow, or the twinkles of distant festive lights that made me feel that way.

I was returning from three nights in the champagne region, where I’d visited Epernay (left), the home of 35 champagne houses.

In that time I learned that champagne isn’t the only thing made in heaven. Food and champagne is also made in heaven. My visit confirmed that champagne brings food and wine pairing elegance to Christmas.

One day I enjoyed rosé champagne for lunch with a butternut squash soup with croutons and a croque canard (a very delicious thick toastie with duck and melting cheese).

Let me testify that a glass of champagne is delicious alongside seafood. Take note if you’re thinking of scallops (right) or prawns for your Christmas starter.

Think chicken, veal, turkey, beef, duck; think risottos; think cheeses; think chocolate.

Here’s some go-to thoughts to welcome a bubble or two of champagne into your festive life.

Asda’s Extra Special

Louis Bernard Champagne 2014 Vintage Brut (left) is normally £26 but £17.33 until January 1st.

Vintage champagnes are only made in special years when grapes have the right concentration and quality.

One of my favourite supermarket vintage champagnes is Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne 2013 (£27) which is always a ripe-fruited dazzle of fizz.

The Wine Society has a couple of stars, including its own The Society’s Champagne Brut (£34) and the super-delightful Boizel Brut Reserve NV (£38).

I also graced the home of the very famous Moët Imperial (RRP £40, widely available including Tesco, Waitrose, Majestic, Sainsbury’s).

Another famous name is Taittinger Brut Reserve, which is £39 at Tesco.

I’ll share more another time, but until then find out more about Epernay at epernay-tourisme.com
