Policeman ‘kissed mum’ after visiting to fix cooker, jury told

-

A POLICE officer sexually assaulted a Birmingham mother after offering to mend her gas cooker, it was alleged.

Shaukat Zaman also asked her intimate questions and suggested she sit on his lap, Birmingham Crown Court was told.

Prosecutor Mark Brookes alleged that at one point Zaman took hold of her and “kissed her forcing his tongue into her mouth.” She tried to push him away but struggled because of the disparity in their height, the court heard.

Zaman, 42, Sparkhill, denied charges of sexual assault and another serious sexual offence.

Mr Brookes said in 2019 the woman lived in a council house with her children. She had asked friends if they could recommend anyone who could repair her cooker.

Two estimates were given to her, each quoting £50, while Zaman was offering to do the job for £30 so she went for the cheaper option, said Mr Brookes.

Zaman went to her home on March 2 and was “immediately forward with her,” the court was told. The officer allegedly told her she ‘smelt nice’, said Mr Brookes.

He said Zaman told her that he had been told by one of his friends that she was single and a ‘nice girl’. After telling him ‘he should concentrate on his work’ Zaman allegedly said he needed parts for the job and would have to come back, said Mr Brookes. She said that was fine but he then allegedly said there might be something else he could do and they went outside where she held a torch so he could see what he was doing, the court was told.

Mr Brookes said Zaman again allegedly told her she smelt nice and asked her personal questions about relationships and her sex life.

He said: “She felt he was stalling, trying to turn a five minute job into a 45 minute job.”

It was alleged he said to her that she was sitting too far away and that she should ‘sit on his lap’. Mr Brookes said at one point they had gone upstairs and that Zaman made a comment allegedly saying she should have a bigger bed.

After they had gone downstairs again, he said, the defendant ‘appeared to run out of excuses to stay’, the court was told. Mr Brookes said the woman felt that if he had not been a police officer she would have been more forceful in getting him out of the house.

He said Zaman had then allegedly took hold of her and ‘kissed her forcing his tongue into her mouth’. Zaman then went on to carry out a further serious sexual assault before she eventually managed to get away, alleged Mr Brookes.

When later interviewed the officer admitted going to the property about the cooker but claimed that the woman was the instigator of any sexual contact between them.
