More skeletons in closet when money starts running out?
I AM a monarchist – for our system is a special part of being British.
The Royal Family bring in a vast amount of tourist income from all over the world.
People are fascinated by our history, the twists and turns, plus, yes, the scandal and gossip.
But I have not been pleased at the revelations authorised by The Duke of Sussex in his book Spare.
All families have rows and disagreements, but sensible members keep their opinions very much to themselves, especially if they happen to be royalty.
I do not need to be told, for example, about Prince Harry’s early sexual activity. Nor is it essential to be made aware of his record of frostbite to a part of his machinery – such matters should always remain strictly private.
His claim to have dispatched some 25 Taliban was verging on the stupid, for it puts both himself and his family at risk in the future should there be some form of retaliation.
The prince has made his feelings very plain about the King’s consort. It is obvious that they have little chemistry. Yet, in a way, I can understand this after the loss of his own mother and his father divorcing her.
In the Duke’s mind, he blames her for the breakup of his parent’s marriage. Little chance of immediate reconciliation here in the short term.
I find the whole series of revelations very unfortunate, for a family’s dirty laundry should never be discussed in public.
Taxpayers have been made substantial contributions to keep royalty the hallmark of Britain, Prince Harry enjoying his share, and in return a little more thought should have been given to permitting confidential information an airing in return for a vast amount of money.
Both the Duke and Duchess’s lifestyle requires huge sums of hard cash, and I suppose when the money earned from the present exposure starts to diminish, as it surely will, then we will get another series of ghosted revelations from the Duchess.
It all seems very unseemly.
No, I have not bought the book – that would only be giving encouragement.
