Fred is given a free ticket to go Racing

-

FORGOTTEN man Frederic Guilbert has joined RC Strasbourg on a free transfer.

The French full-back has left Villa six months before his contract was due to expire.

In a statement issued to Villa’s supporters, Guilbert said: “After more than three years spent here, it is with many shared feelings that I leave Aston Villa by mutual agreement.

“I would like to address you, supporters, to thank you for all the moments we have been able to share. Thank you for the support, thank you for your many messages, thank you for welcoming my family.

“I would also like to thank the people who have accompanied me during the last six months, especially all the young U23s as well as all the staff members. I wish Aston Villa Football Club and all the teams a nice continuation for the future.”

Guilbert spent the second half of last season on loan at the Ligue 1 club who, this season, are fighting relegation.

Racing president Marc Keller said: “We have always stayed in touch. Fred will now participate fully with us in the success of the objective we have set ourselves for the rest of the season: to keep Racing in Ligue 1 and provide pleasure to our supporters.”

The right-back failed to impress both Dean Smith and Steven Gerrard and was soon banished to play with Villa’s Under-21s this season. Guilbert’s situation remained the same under Unai Emery following his appointment in October.

In a statement, Villa said: “Aston Villa would like to thank Frederic for his efforts while at the club and wish him all the best in his future career.”

On joining Strasbourg for a second time, Guilbert said: “I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, so I’m really happy.”

Guilbert made 32 first-team appearances for Villa.

Villa have also confirmed the sale of midfielder Indiana Vassilev, who has joined American side St Louis City SC on a two-year deal.

The American returns to his home country after five and a half years with Villa.
