Council tip set to finally reopen after long delays

-

THE long-delayed Perry Barr tip improvement scheme will be unveiled at the end of January.

The new-look site, which will boast improved facilities, is to welcome back householders on January 31. The Holford Lane tip redevelopment has been beset with delays and was supposed to open last spring after it was closed for two years.

Building contractor Tolent went into administration in September and Birmingham City Council was unable to commit to a date.

The council and Veolia took the decision to complete the remaining work themselves rather than source another contractor. Work by the new project team was said to have been hampered by bad weather and issues with acquiring materials. A statement said: “Following the second contractor going into administration, a new programme has now been developed. This will see the completion and opening of the household recycling centre (HRC) on January 31, 2024.

“The recent change in the HRC reopening date is due to severe weather affecting the processes of the build, as well as difficulties experienced with the supply chain.

“Local residents can continue to use any of the city’s other four HRCs or the council’s Mobile Household Recycling Centres, which visit 20 locations every week. Remember to make an online booking before visiting any of the HRC sites.”

Residents who were forced to trek to Sutton Coldfield or Castle Bromwich tips to dump their waste, will be able to book appointments for Perry Barr from January 26. Meanwhile, Lifford Lane tip is set to shut for two years to undergo expansion and remodelling to cut queues. Hundreds of thousands of visits are made to the tip with tens of thousands of tonnes of waste. The nearest site will be James Road, Tyseley.
