Corberan: Albion on right road after talks
HEAD coach Carlos Corberan admits Albion had conversations about their stuttering away form ahead of the blistering 4-1 win at Huddersfield.
Sunday’s resounding come-frombehind victory cemented the Baggies’ place in the Championship play-offs with nine games to go in the regular season.
Albion have been incredibly strong at The Hawthorns but disappointing defeats at the likes of Swansea, Middlesbrough and Norwich had to be addressed.
Since then they have picked up points at fellow promotion contenders Ipswich and Hull and won at Plymouth and Huddersfield.
“We were talking a lot about the results away and how we needed to change the momentum,’’ said Corberan. “That’s why the team is competing well because the players don’t like excuses, they like to take on responsibility and, it’s true, that from the last game away we increased our competitive levels and showed understanding of how difficult it is to win away.
“We know in this moment of the season we have to give our best in these type of challenges and fight until we achieve what we want to achieve.”
Despite trailing in the first half at the John Smith’s Stadium, Corberan backed his players to turn it around.
He said: “Sometimes it’s not easy to adapt to the needs of the game or to the contest the opponent is going to create.
“The most important thing in football is how you finish the games and the team had a very good reaction and adaptation to the different needs of this game.
“The key of this game was to break the press. We tried to break the press playing difficult passes and making difficult things instead of using the space in behind because the advantage was through the pass in behind.
“I think in the second half the team understood that very well and that, for me, is why we made a very good second half.
“Firstly, you need to have the desire to achieve something, to win the game. The players put in the maximum level of effort and commitment. It’s important we find options to finish attacks from different players.”
