ROYAL Birmingham Conservatoire prides itself on staging the best value concerts in the city.
From lunchtime recitals to early evening jazz gigs, family operas, theatre productions and risk-taking, experimental new work, the range is as large as it is eclectic and the quality always top notch. Many events, including its regular Monday lunchtime concert series, are completely free, while most of the rest have a top ticket price of £15 or less. Here are some forthcoming highlights...
RBC Spring Recorder Festival, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, April 13-14. A weekend-long festival celebrating recorders of all shapes and sizes sets off with a concert by the English Wind Consort exploring the Renaissance in Europe. Pop-up ensembles, workshops, foyer events and concerts galore culminate in a free Festival Jamboree Concert on the Sunday.
Global Traditions, Eastside Jazz Club, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, April 21, 3.30pm Three intimate concert spots in the Eastside Jazz Club.
There are new Celtic folk sounds from the award-winning Ranagri; spontaneous and innovative new music from tabla and banjo duo Sandyman and Dan Walsh; and the laid-back style and uplifting songs of Tom Leader. £10-£15
Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, Eastside Jazz Club, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, April 26, 6.30pm.
The orchestra’s monthly shows bring the audience to their feet with their infectious energy and rhythm, Cuban vibes and salsa sounds. £15
Gogo Penguin, Bradshaw Hall, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, May 11, 7pm.
Emotive, cinematic breakbeat trio GoGo Penguin will play music from their exhilarating new album Everything is Going to Be OK, plus songs from their luminous back catalogue. £22
Stoney Lane Live: Bill Frisell Trio, Bradshaw Hall, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, May 17, 8pm.
The man described as “the most influential guitarist in jazz of the past 30 years”, Bill visits Brum with his trio – Thomas Morgan (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums). £10-£22
