The football medal with NO DEFINED history

- By JOHN WORKMAN

OCCASIONALLY an artefact from the past comes to light that cannot be tracked down to its origins, despite a decent amount of information.

The medal opposite, with both the obverse and reverse sides showing, was brought to our attention by Jane Hollis of Sedgley who wanted to know if we could find out anything about the team, Sedgley Rovers F.C. and or the competition the team had played in back in 1898, the Tipton Park’s Cup.

The normal avenue of research has uncovered very little. There is no reference to a competition called the Tipton Park’s Cup which presumably allowed teams from a wider catchment area to take part, and very little detail about the team Sedgley Rovers F.C. There was a Sedgley Town Sports team that played in the West Midlands (Regional) League (formerly the Birmingham & District League until 1962) from 1889, which suggests they could have been involved in the Tipton Park’s Cup, and Sedgley Rovers joined the Midland Combination Division 2 in the 1983-84 season, so perhaps Sedgley Rovers F. C. was a predecessor of this ’80s team .

If there are Bugle readers who may be able to throw some light on this football mystery please contact us. All the contact details you need can be found on page 2. It would be interesting to find out a little more about the competition that took place in the parks of Tipton.
