I saw gnomes behind bars at Dudley Zoo

Black Country Bugle - - YOUR LETTERS -

I read Gavin Jones’s recent articles about Gnomeland at Dudley Zoo, which he remembered seeing as a boy in the 1970s or early 1980s.

I was also on a dig at the zoo, as mentioned by Paul Bowen, working as a chargehand 1985-88, until the dig ended. I don’t recall the unearthing of gnomes in the time I was there, but they could have been dug up in 1984 when the dig started.

However I worked on the zoo on a YTS, painting and decorating, in 1982-83, and I saw a group of gnomes in situ in the turret behind a grille fence in pets corner, by the reptile house. Perhaps that was all that was left of the attraction. Or was that it?!
