Tenacious Tipton hold out for another win

- By JOHN CROSS

Birmingham Saturday Challenge Vase Round 2

COVENTRY ALVIS 0 TIPTON TOWN 1

TIPTON won their second cup-tie in three days with a valiant performance against an equally committed home club.

A frenetic opening greeted Tipton as Coventry were just shading the volume of attacking before being pegged back themselves when Shore had the misfortune of seeing his drive deflected clear.

Tipton took the lead on 31 minutes, Teejay Davies breaking at speed down the right before crossing accurately to Scott Broadway who fired home through a crowded posse of defenders.

On 42 minutes it may well have been 0-2 when Davies put Shore clear, Danny Purvin rescuing the hosts with a smart interception.

Storming

The second half began with Coventry storming forward, penning Tipton right back into their goal area, Sam Armstrong gratefully relieving pressure following a challenge.

A Jamie Saidler freekick at the home goal was beaten away by Hartopp allowing Coventry to pressurize Tipton once more, Ryan Murphy unlucky not to defeat Tipton keeper Thomas in the 58th minute. Further pressure upon the Tipton goal ensued, the ball cannoning off their crossbar before being hurriedly hooked well clear.

Tipton soon found themselves under great pressure once more, splendid teamwork extricating them from an awkward situation. Yet another home attack heralded a welltimed likely equaliser but committed defending saw the Tipton through.

With Coventry now producing much of the attacking, another goalbound effort, courtesy of Lewis Ludford, was gratefully turned aside.

Header

Tipton managed to dig even deeper and make tracks towards the home goal where Luke Johnson’s cross found Davies whose miscued effort sailed well over the bar.

After Armstrong had seen his header at the home goal drift away from the target on 86 minutes Coventry bounced back, forcing a corner at the other end, Ryan Murphy heading past the post.

Injury time arrived with Coventry still surging forward, endeavouring to take the tie into extratime but Tipton’s dogged defending eventually triumphed, seeing them through to the next round on the back of their midweek League Cup triumph against local rivals, Darlaston Town.

Manager Neil Perks has clearly brought much more stability and attacking verve to this side.

Next fixture Saturday November 24, versus Bromyard Town (home) 3pm.
