Wasteful Wednesbury throw away early lead

- By RON JENKINS

Rugby Union WEDNESBURY 13 EDWARDIANS 19

THIS week Wednesbury entertained Edwardians, a side just above them in the league.

Wednesbury played well for the first sixty minutes, and then everything fell apart, allowing Edwardians to get back into the game and eventually to win.

After only a few minutes Wednesbury were awarded a penalty, Sean Bottomer stepped up to convert it. They kept the pressure on the visitors, their forwards pushing, and it was on one of these sorties Wednesbury’s captain Josh Harris received the ball out wide and raced over the line for the try, no conversion.

From this point it started to get scrappy and bad tempered, resulting in both sides giving away lots of penalties. Half way through the first half Edwardians were awarded two in two minutes, both converted.

With five minutes of the half remaining Wednesbury increased their score. Ben Baker peeled off the maul and dived over the line.

The second half found the game becoming increasingly scrappy, and shortly after a yellow card for each side, Edwardians broke away to score a converted try and level the scores.

In the last ten minutes of the game Edwardians were awarded two penalties in the space of two minutes, both they kicked successfully giving them the lead and the victory.

Wednesbury coach Gary Summers said after the game that it was disappointing to lose after being dominant tactically in the first half

Next week Wednesbury are at home again, their opponents Uttoxeter, kick-off 2-15.

Wednesbury 2nds fared much better, beating Leek 3rds, by 90 points to 7, running in fourteen tries and ten conversions.
