Steps to mem­ory lane

I have only just re­ceived my copy of Bu­gle 1347, June 20 – my sis­ter-in-law saves them for me, for when I can get to Smeth­wick to see her.

I re­mem­ber the steps very well. I used to climb on the wall on the other side of the steps to col­lect train num­bers.

Com­ing up those steps there was a pub on the left, op­po­site the toll house, called the Ge­orge and un­der the steps there was a pub­lic uri­nal. In the old days, I be­lieve, there use to be a mar­ket there as well.
