High Street Lament

- by Alan Jones

Please don’t let the High Street die With its ramshackle shops And things to buy And familiar faces, passing by Please don’t let the High Street die. Please let’s preserve Our High Street culture Don’t let it be gobbled up By the online vulture We want real shops of glass, Bricks and mortar. Please let’s preserve Our High Street culture. Please don’t let Our High Street fade away With its exciting, inviting Window display That always gave meaning to Saturday Please don’t let Our High Stree fade away. Please don’t let Our High Street be replaced By faceless warehouse storage space Like a tin-topped Territorial Army base Please don’t let Our High Street be replaced. So you make you purchase With the touch of a computer key And it’s like the launching Of a nuclear missile to me Oh, there’s no explosion No mushroom cloud to see Just destruction, creeping Oh so insidiously. Please don’t let our High Street die With its ramshackle shops And things to buy And familiar faces, passing by Please don’t let our High Street die.
