Terry Price, author and historian, dies aged 81
IT’S with great sadness that we have to bring you the news that author, historian and long-term contributor to the Bugle, Terry Price, has died.
Terry who passed away after a long illness, at the age of 81, was a familiar figure to many, especially in his native West Bromwich. In the last couple of decades Terry produced nine books, collections of vintage photographs from Great Bridge and West Bromwich. The launch of each of Terry’s books was always eagerly anticipated, with stocks selling out within weeks each time. Though he swore on at least two occasions that the current book would be his last, he was often tempted to come out of retirement and, to the delight of his everincreasing audience, produce another book. His last publication was produced while he was still battling with his health, but such was his dedication to the history of his home town, he never let that get in his way.
Terry began his working life as radio repair man, eventually moving up to become a divisional manager.
History
He retired at the age of fifty, and was then able to dedicate his spare time to local history. As well as his photographic books, Terry was also responsible for bringing about the impressive memorial to the West Bromwichborn Hollywood actress Madeleine Carroll in 2007. Terry campaigned for it and part-funded it, as well as plaques on the houses she lived in as a child.
His funeral will be held on June 12 at Sandwell Valley Crematorium, but because of current social distancing rules, only close friends and family will be in attendance. Terry’s wife Beryl has said, however, that she hopes to hold a celebration of Terry’s life later in the year if and when restrictions are lifted.
