Tipton lad lined up with the Baggies and Bite yer Legs

- By GAVIN JONES

WE first featured this photograph two editions ago, when Colin Saunders of Rowley Regis put it our way.

Colin sent it as a tribute to defender Norman Hunter, who he worked with when Norman joined the coaching staff at West Bromwich. Colin named most of those in the group, but there were several press men that he couldn’t identify.

But our regular contributor Steve Gordos could. As former sports editor at the Express & Star, Steve recognised a couple of the faces straight away. One was Dave Harrison, and

Steve forwarded the article to him, which has enabled him to furnish us with the following information. Steve told us:

“We can now put names to the four journalists who were part of the ‘Albion’ side pictured in the Bugle (May13).

Midlands

“Standing third from the left is Hugh Jamieson who worked for the Sun and was based in the Midlands. He also covered tennis for the Sun. He died aged 76 in 2017.

“Next along is David Harrison who was born and bred in Tipton. He worked for the Evening Mail, Express & Star,

Today and the News of the World, covering football and other major sports events all over the globe.

“Between goalkeeper John Osborne and Norman Hunter is George Gavin, a familiar face on Sky Sports and a regular still on local radio, as is the chap on the extreme right of the front row – Tom Ross.

“Tom has been probably the most recognisable voice of sport on Midland radio for many years.

“Dave Harrison confirmed the game took place in the early 1980s at the NEC and was played in aid of charity – though he could not recall who provided the opposition.”
