Black Country Bugle

May Day in 1948

- By DAN SHAW

THIS picture in the Bugle collection shows Black Country school- kids celebrating May Day 73 years ago.

The school was City Road School in Oakham – better known as Oakham Primary School, which first opened in 1939 to serve the new housing estates in the area.

The picture was given to us by Joan Huybens, nee Haynes, who left the Black Country to live in Australia, and she told us the names of the some of the children.

The May Queen was Janet Richards and Joan was one of her four attendants; the others were Aileen Bishop, Vivian Haywood and Lucy Pritchard.

Among the younger children at the front, on the far left we have Emanuella Messer; fourth left, Hazel Hughes; and ninth left, Eve Haynes.

Some of the teachers in the 1940s were Mr Bates, Mrs Rudge, Miss Timmins, Mrs Horton, Mrs Sutherland and Mr Moore.
