Clive seeks cartoonist to bring story up to date

- By GAVIN JONES

THE gold and black half of the Black Country have been enjoying Clive Corbett revisiting The Story of the Wolves over recent months, the ‘Lyon’ cartoons which told of the club’s early days.

But Clive is now coming to a point where he is going to need some help if the story is to carry on. He told us:

“Although I have got months’ worth of the Wolves story in cartoons, it stops in 1946 with Cartoon 85. There are no more!

“So I’d like to make an appeal for a cartoonist who might be interested in working with me to produce new cartoons, from 1946 to the present day.

“It is a big project but I think it would be very interesting.

“If I can find someone who could do it, the plan is to update the story in a book next year.”

If you think you could help Clive continue the story in cartoons, you can email him at the following address: gpbooks@hot mail.co.uk

THIS charming school photograph may be three quarters of a century old but do you recognise any of the young girls with their teacher?

They were class Upper 5A at Holly Lodge High School for Girls in Smethwick.

The school was founded in 1922 to serve the growing population that straddled the border of the old boroughs of Smethwick and Oldbury. Its original location was a converted town house but the school moved to a purpose built home in 1927. The corresponding boys grammar school in Holly

Lodge moved into buildings opposite the girls’ school in 1937.

In the Second World War the school was evacuated to Newport in Shropshire, to the Haberdashers’ Adams grammar school – so these girls were likely to have spent some of their time there.

Holly Lodge girls and boys schools combined into a single High School in 1974.
