Black Country Bugle

Old warriors at the end of the road

- By GAVIN JONES

FOUR weeks ago, in our June 30 edition, we featured some rather sad photographs from transport enthusiast Roger F de Boer.

Scrapyards

They showed a variety of buses about to meet their end at a variety of Black Country scrapyards.

And here are a few more from Roger’s collection, all of which he took himself as a youngster.

On the right is a retired London bus. Rather than being put out of its misery in the capital, this one came up to Tat Bank scrapyard in Oldbury in 1970, for what we would now refer to as recycling. This particular example was registered JXC114, and arrived on the first day of the year, along with a number of other London double deckers.

Below is HG9511, a Leyland single decker at Don Everall’s yard, pictured on March 13, 1968. According to Roger, it was to go on to make a ‘useful staff bus’ when it was resold.

Guys

Finally, at the bottom of the page is a mixture of old Wolverhampton warhorses. These, Roger tells us, were Guys and Daimlers, awaiting removal at Oxford Street, Wolverhampton, also on March 13, 1968.
