Heritage Day brings more memories from village’s past
LAST week, Wall Heath historian, author and regular contributor Terry Church shared with us some of the photographs that had come to light following a recent celebration of times past in his home village.
Queues
Wall Heath Heritage Day was so successful that villagers past and present were queuing up outside to get in, with almost six hundred visitors in total.
Above is a picture from the village’s Yew Tree pub, which at one time would hold its own annual Harvest Festival. It was supplied by Nicola Neve, and though there is not date on it, everything about it suggests the 1950s. Pictured are, from left in the back row: unknown, G Tapper, Geoff Billingsley, Vic Tetsill, unknown.
Front row: Unknown, Irene Tapper, Ethel Tetsill.
Below is a school sporting picture from 1964-65, which was supplied by Mavis Mallen. Mavis, whose maiden name was Clee, tells us that they were the Maidensbridge School skittles team, and supplies the names as follows:
Back row: Linda ___, Deirdre ____, Diane Stretch, Elizabeth Elwell.
Front row: Alison ___, Mavis Mallen, Joy ___.
Fifties
And on the opposite page is a large group from Penzer Street School in Kingswinford, these days
known as the Kingswinford Academy.
It dates from 1951, and comes from former pupil Shirley Brough, or Shirley Hawkins as she would be better known to her contemporaries.
Athletics
Going by their attire and the fact that they’re of both sexes and a variety of ages, we’d guess that this was the school’s athletics teams all gathered together. Can you name anyone in that picture? ■ If you can tell us anything about any of the photographs we’d love to hear from you: email gjones@blackcountryb ugle.co.uk, give us a call on 01384 880531, or write to us at Black Country Bugle, Dudley Archive Centre, Tipton Road, Dudley, West Midlands, DY1 4SQ.
