We all grew up with Bernard Cribbins
BERNARD Cribbins was someone we grew up with and was always there – just like the Queen.
He had such a fantastic career with many varied and endearing roles which we all took to our heart. From his early appearance with Peter Sellers in Two Way Stretch, to his hilarious characters in three Carry On films, such as Carry On Jack where he played Albert Poop Decker and somehow won through despite that pleading voice of his.
For me I always remember watching him at school during the holidays when the TV schedulers laid on activities to keep us occupied. One of the films screened year after year was the Doctor Who classic Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 AD. He was marvellous next to Peter Cushing.
Many adults held him dear to their hearts from his stints on Jackanory and The Wombles. He even starred in the spoof version of Casino Royale and went on to further build up an audience with the children later on in life in Old Jack’s Boat on Cbeebies.
It was a real tonic to meet him over the years when he made appearances, which he continued to do right to the end, and he was never averse to giving you a burst of Orinoco if you asked him kindly. He will be sadly missed by all, but we may be treated to some more of his work in the tributes to come.
