Black Country Bugle

Fun and formality for trainee teachers

- By GAVIN JONES gjones@blackcountrybugle.co.uk

THESE pictures from the Bugle collection show one of Dudley’s finest, lost institutions – Dudley Training College.

It was built on land at Eve Hill, bought by the council from the Earl of Dudley, and opened in the summer of 1909.

Which means that these teachers-in-the-making, on the right, were some of the first to be trained there, having been pictured on the front steps in 1912. If you look closely, you can see another three faces in the window behind them, on the right hand side.

The main picture, above, was also taken at the Training College, presumably on Rag Day, if that’s what they called it back then. This one is very slightly more recent, dating from 1919, the year following the First World War. The only other information we have with it is that the young woman in the middle of the back row, dressed as a nurse, is named as Marion Gray.
