Plant hyacinth bulbs in pots, above, or bowls to flower around Christmas. Keep them in a cool, dark place to take root, and water sparingly.

Move any leaves covering pumpkins so they can ripen and colour. Sit them on tiles so they aren’t on damp ground in the autumn to help prevent rotting.

Snap the top inch or two from the main stem of outdoor tomato plants to stop growth and help green toms to swell and ripen.

Transplant spring cabbage plants. Give them firmed ground, flood them in with lots of water, inset, and cover with bird netting.
