Cartoon man Norman captured Dickie’s strange send-off

- Steve Gordos, Tettenhall Wood, Wolverhmpton

I recently wrote about Dickie Dorsett (Bugle, November 9), being sent off when playing for Wolves on their Swedish tour in 1946.

Dickie did not understand what the referee was saying to him and a British Embassy official in bowler hat had to stride on to the field to explain he was being given his marching orders.

I’ve since found this cartoon by Norman Edwards, which appeared in the Sports Argus in 1963 when the paper was serialising Dickie’s recollections on his career.

In the absence of a photo – there would no doubt have been several taken if something similar happened today – this cartoon seems to capture the bizarre situation.
