Our Holiday

- By Tim Lloyd

We finally got to the station Excited and full of good cheer, We were going on holiday to Blackpool Like we’d done for the last four year.

It was packed with people all doing the same, And the noise level was driving us mad There was whistles blowing, doors banging, And the P.A. was really bad,

But there stood this massive steam engine All gleaming and ready to go. I went running up as close as I dare And ower kid came running up too.

It suddenly gave out an almighty whoof! And the cloud of steam and smoke Nearly blew us off our feet. The driver said “It was only a joke.”

On the train we got into a compartment, Me and ower kid sat near a window. We cheered as we pulled out of the station While I rid my eye of a cinder.

Then I stuck my head out of a door As the wind blew in my face and hair. Mom called us back to have our lunch, Sandwiches, crisps, and a pear.

I opened the grease proof paper, And sure my dreams had come true.

The sandwiches were filled with smoked ham, With a thin sliced tomato on too. We always had smoked ham on the train, Whether we were coming or going In a way it was the highlight of the week Regardless of what we’d been doing.

We eventually got to Blackpool, Some kids asked to carry our cases. Dad agreed, and gave them some money, And that put a smile on their faces. Somehow I ended up stood on my own Not knowing if they’d gone on ahead. When at last my dad found me, He gave me a smack round the head.

That was a good start to the holiday, But it picked up from there on in. Every day on the beach, whatever the weather, We was froze but took it on the chin,

The sand got in everywhere as well; Nose, ears, every cranny and nook, Then back to the digs for our tea, Soup, roast chicken and veg with a bit of luck.

It seemed like we’d been there ages, As we managed to do loads of stuff. We’d only been there a week It just wasn’t long enough.

Two days was spent just travelling, Yes, the train was great when we came. But when we were on it going back home, It just didn’t seem the same.
