AFTER extensive renovation work, Lye Community Centre reopened to the public this month.

Almost £200,000 has been spent to give the whole centre a desperately needed makeover which has resulted in some significant changes. There is new flooring throughout, relocation of the kitchen, secondary glazing, new toilets, fencing, CCTV fitted and a lower floor internal extension.

Shaz Tariq, the centre’s Administrative Officer, told the Bugle:

“We believe that community centres are a vital element of the community, an asset which belongs to everyone.

“Like a home brings families together, likewise a community centre brings a whole community together. It’s where common grounds are sought and bridges of friendships are built.

“A building which is not just bricks and mortar or just a place of hire, but a facility which supports all community-based initiatives. To welcome all, create a healthy environment and deliver a range of activities to enable social, physical and mental health and wellbeing.

“We are hoping to achieve all the above aims and we encourage everyone to promote and utilise this facility, so that the centre invests back into it’s community.

“It has been a very long, tiring and challenging journey for our committee and everyone who has contributed their time and effort into this project.

“But the overall reward in being able to give back into a place where you have been born and bred and feel proud to be a part of, and have the opportunity to invest in a community facility which belongs to our local area, has all been well worth it.”
